ENGL 326: Research Essay

Length: 2500 words

Due date: Monday, November 28

In this essay, you will apply one of the theories we have studied in the course.  If you wish to write on a different text, it must be something that I am intimately familiar with.  Essays must conform to MLA Style.

You are not expected to discuss the entire text, just a character, scene, theme, and so forth, that you will interpret from your particular theoretical perspective.  Please employ a different theory than the one you applied in your presentation.

Possible questions:

1. Using feminist or deconstruction theory, compare Lady Macbeth to the witches.

2. How does Reader-Response theory help us understand Macbeth's soliloquys?

3. Using Marxist theory, how do class differences enable murder in Macbeth?

4. Employ psychoanalytical theory to discuss Medicine River.

5. How does New Historicism help us understand racial discrimination in Medicine River?

6. Discuss Never Cry Wolf as an early example of an ecocritical novel.

7. How does Canada as a postcolonial country enable the mistreatment of Nature?

You should incorporate 4-5 secondary sources into your essay, which means that you must be able to recognize the theoretical position of the critic in question. One or more of these sources may be a text about the theory itself, and not about your specific text.

PLAGIARISM

Academic dishonesty is a serious offence with potentially disastrous consequences, and I intend to hold you to the highest standards of integrity and honesty. Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with University policies regarding scholarly ethics and academic integrity (see current King's calendar).

There is a zero tolerance policy and multiple incidents may affect your academic record. Stiff penalties apply for offenders:

•  First offense = automatic zero on the assignment.

•  Second offense = automatic failure of the course.

•  Subsequent offense = convening of Discipline Committee with power to recommend penalties up to and including expulsion from the University.

Please discuss with me any concerns you may have regarding your research or other matters.  I will also address plagiarism and proper citation methods throughout the semester, and post information on our website.
